Christopher Woodward

Session Topic: 3-Year Business Plan

Christopher has been the Director of the Garden Museum since 2007, joining what was then the Museum of Garden History at a time when it was debating whether its future was in London or in the countryside? The reconstruction of the Museum was completed in 2007 at a cost of £8.2 million and Christopher and his team are currently working on a project to create a park around the Museum named ‘Lambeth Green’.

Before that I was Director of the Holburne Museum of Art in Bath, and Assistant Curator of Sir John Soane’s Museum; I studied History of Art at Cambridge. I grew up in Hertfordshire and live I Brockley and my favourite things in Lambeth are Brockwell Lido and the Country Fair. I was a Trustee of the Heritage Lottery Fund until 2013.

In personal terms, I write about ruins, nostalgia and swimming, and I do lots of swimming; for the Museum sponsored swims have included from Newlyn in Cornwall to the island of Tresco during the pandemic (which raised £524,619) and from Oxford to London in the River Thames, to support the return of parts of John Tradescant’s ‘Ark’ to Lambeth.
